act for change: paxton house
Was a pleasure to work with Helen at Paxton House to fund their project for Act for Change. What a successful time they had! Read on for more information.
“The funding received enables us to purchase a variety of seeds, compost and pots which were used by families in two home learning sessions and 1 session with a group of older children. They were able to plant a variety of seeds and willow weave pea frames. Everyone enjoyed the gardening activities and were eager to plant some more at home. This is part of a longer-term kitchen garden project within the kitchen garden and was also combined with a larger project from Museum Galleries Scotland on climate change called sewing for hope which involved 90 S2 children from Eyemouth High School.

“that was great fun and so easy, I am going to plant some more at home”
“ this has raised my awareness on how to improve my environment and issues towards climate change.” “ it was interesting to see how things can be reused into something new”
“ I am amazed to see how little space I need to plant some herbs and vegetables.”
This project has therefore raised the children’s awareness of climate change through the aspect of recycling to make their own pots, making pea frames from what is already in the garden and how easy it is to plant seeds both vegetable, flower and herb which will in turn improve our local environment and in the summer will provide us with lovely food to eat. This part of the project was targeted on our home learning group which is attended mostly by children under 7 and a session with young adults aged 16 to 20, however bought resources will also be used by visiting local schools, local community visitors and volunteers on site therefore having a long lasting and ongoing impact. As mentioned above this was linked with the sewing for hope project and linked to Eyemouth High Schools project on sustainability. The work on the kitchen garden is ongoing with regular school visits, monthly home learning visits and with our 10 older gardening volunteers. Many thanks for this opportunity”
Huge well done to all involved!
