Act for change: Galashiels academy

Galashiels Academy have been very busy working on their biodiversity project as part of their Act for Change action. Read on to hear their update.

“In consultation with the Parks Development Officer for the Galashiels Policies woodland we identified an environmental project to clear a large area of invasive rhododendron bushes. S1 pupils were offered the opportunity to participate in this project and we received over 40 names! These pupils have been split into small work groups of 8, and are heading out to the woodland for two school periods each week, for 5 weeks. Discussions with our volunteers have revolved around the reasons for carrying out the project, as well as PPE and personal safety considerations. During the work the pupils also discovered some old drinks cans and crisp packets which sparked a conversation around how long certain litter takes to decompose and the issues surrounding litter in general. The tools bought with the funding from this project will enable us to continue to work with the Parks Development Officer, identifying further projects which will maintain our young people’s interest and enthusiasm in caring for our local wild places.”

We look forward to seeing how the project progresses! Well done team.
